Joe John retired as 2nd Vice President Marketing from Monumental Life Insurance Company (a division of AEGON USA), after spending 32 years in Sales and Marketing in the life insurance industry.
In addition to his marketing, communications and sales promotion responsibilities was working with his associate in the Marketing Support area in the creative staging, scripting and production of the company conferences and meetings. Joe was also instrumental in developing concepts for point-of-sale sales/marketing pieces for agent and customer use, both print and computer-based presentations.
When he wasn’t busy with the for profit activities, his volunteer activities included working with Volunteers of America, fundraising for the United Way (Louisville and Baltimore), the Greater Louisville Fund for the Performing Arts, the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, and the Baltimore Marathon. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Kentucky Humane Society, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Sister Cities of Louisville, and President of the Board of Directors for Fourth and Fitness Health Center in Louisville.
He was President of Sister Cities of Louisville, when the organization was responsible for the City of Louisville hosting the Sister Cities International Conference in the mid 90’s. This international event included bringing all six mayors and representatives from Louisville’s six Sister Cities. During that same time period, he also served as co-chair of the Member Services Committee for Sister Cities International.
And now that Joe is retired, his primary volunteer emphasis has been working on the Greater Louisville YMCA Annual Campaign for the Oldham County YMCA, sitting on the board of directors for the OCYMCA (greater Louisville), Secretary and Public Relations Director for Sister Cities of Louisville, and previously served on the board of directors for the Oldham County Greenways Hike-and-Bike Project. He’s also on the Commonwealth Insurance Alumni Board, and is active in St. James Episcopal Church.
In addition to his volunteer activities, Joe is “active” in retirement. He is Senior Public Relations Counselor for Business Consulting Group (www.BC-Group.net) and also consults, trains, and speaks for his company Off the Wall Marketing, LLC.
Three Year Term
I live in Pewee Valley with my wife Julie and my two children Katie and Zack. We recently moved from La Grange and are excited to live closer to St. James. We are originally from California, where Julie and I grew up and where both Katie and Zack were born. I work as a physical education specialist for a company called SPARK, where I write curriculum and present professional development workshops for teachers.
We have been attending St. James regularly for a year and a half and really enjoy the people, services, and activities. Everyone has welcomed our family and been very supportive of us during our time here. This is why I would like to give back and help be a part of building our church community.
I am a businessman and gentleman farmer. My primary business is based in Middletown, Ohio and my farm is Waldeck Farm in Crestwood where we raise approximately 500 acres of corn, soybeans, and wheat. I live with my wife, Helena and 19 animals at Tanglewood next to St. James’ Church. I first became a member of St. James in 1951 when my family moved to Pewee Valley and purchased Tanglewood. My father, Grove Gleason took us to St. James while my mother was an organist at several other churches. He served on the Vestry and taught Sunday School. Although there were periods of time when I was away from St. James, I always returned so I consider myself a 60 year member. I have never served on the Vestry, but I would be interested in a three year commitment.
